Physical Laptop Security

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

There are many ways of keeping your laptop safe and secure. There are people everywhere that are just waiting to steal your laptop because it is an easy target and they can get a substantial amount for its sale. This makes it important for you to make sure that you have some form of physical laptop security. Most laptop owners don’t realize it, but in the side or back of their laptop is a small inconspicuous slot that has probably caught their attention from time to time. This is a security slot and it has been engineered into the chassis of the laptop.

There are many laptop security products you can use to protect your laptop. Using a specially designed and very strong laptop security cable, you will find at one end a special locking mechanism which fits that laptop security slot with ease. This is the concept of physical laptop security and when you leave your computer unattended for any lengths of time whether it is in a college dormitory or even at the office, a laptop lock should be used along with a cable in order to secure the laptop directly to a hard to move or completely immovable object. This will help to really reduce the chances of your expensive laptop getting stolen.

Of course this is not the only form of physical laptop security because there are several others. Everyone has head of the importance of using a firewall and most likely you have been told by some that your operating system’s built-in software firewall should be more then satisfactory. Unfortunately this is not always the case because the software can only do so much. Using a small LAN router when you connect to a wired network creates a hardware firewall which is virtually impenetrable by would-be thieves.

It is important for any laptop owner to not only keep their electronic device safe from physical thefts, but also from those who come in through networks to access the data you have stored on your computer. But you do have to remember that software alone cannot protect your laptop properly while at the same time neither can hardware. You need to use a good combination of both software and physical laptop security systems if you want to truly have a secure laptop.

You never know where or who may be a thief just watching and waiting for you to turn your back for a few moments so they can take your laptop from you. They are so light and mobile that they can steal the laptop even in a busy coffee house without ever being noticed. They are so swift and cunning that they can slide in undetected and steal only the data from the hard drive without you ever knowing it; even if you are sitting at the computer using it when the theft occurs. Make sure you are properly protected not only those who want the computer itself, but also from those who just want to steal the data.
